We Are Your Internationalization - Localization - Globalization Experts

What is meant by terms such as internationalization, localization and globalization?

Internationalization is planning and programming software and web products as well as websites in such a way that their customization for local markets is easily adaptable; localization is the final stage of adapting software, Web products and Web sites for local markets--language and cultural elements are adapted so users feel the product or service has been designed specifically for them. Globalization analysis simply determines success or failure when establishing a global presence.

The dominance of English on the internet is set to decline as more and more companies realize that websites and software will be appealing only if it is offered in the customers' native language. Companies will not be able to leverage the full value of their offerings without approaching customers in their native language, using culturally-appropriate context. Consider the following:

  • 50% of Internet users (estimated) are non-English speaking. Source: Global Reach
  • 50% of all online sales were sold outside of US by 2004. Source: Forrester Research

  • 72% of small businesses use e-mail for customer contact, 48% operate a website and 28% now sell goods and services online. Source: Cyberdialogue
  • 25% of internet users (estimated) surf only in Chinese, expected to be 50% in 2003. Source: China-Channel.com
  • Government and venture capitalists will not invest in infrastructure for companies unless there is relevant content to attract users.

With the proliferation of e-business, companies are attempting to reach a broader audience by tapping into the international market. Web and document content must be customized to address differences in language, culture, and regional issues surrounding a particular locale. To manage these globalization issues, companies must first efficiently extract content from multiple formats, data sources, language, and then find an effective means to localize the content.
